The Short Story

EDGAR ALLEN POE’S THEORY OF THE SHORT STORY

* The story must be readable in a single sitting

* The story contains a single effect and the readers attention is focused on this effect

* The short story will not attempt to develop characters or a variety of incidents

* The structure is carefully planned with all intervening actions supporting the single effect

*The story will contain a unifying element

The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug. Mark Twain

I really haven't had that exciting of a life. There are a lot of things I wish I would have done, instead of just sitting around and complaining about having a boring life. So I pretty much like to make it up. I'd rather tell a story about somebody else. Kurt Cobain

Essential Questions:

  • What are the elements of fiction and how do authors use them in crafting short stories?

  • How does point of view affect how one reads and interprets a short story?

  • How does an author convey a theme in a short story?

Those who tell the stories rule society. Plato
